Understanding Engineers

Understanding Engineers - Take One

Two engineering students were walking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"

The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."

The second engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice; the clothes  probably wouldn't have fitted you anyway."

 Understanding Engineers - Take Two

To the optimist, the glass is half full.
To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.
To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Understanding Engineers - Take Three

A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers.

The engineer fumed, "What's with those blokes? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"

The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"

The priest said, "Here comes the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him."  He said, "Hello, George! what's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"

The greens keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind fire fighters.  They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime."

The group fell silent for a moment.  The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight."

The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything he can do for them."

The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"

Understanding Engineers - Take Four

What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers?
Mechanical engineers build weapons and civil engineers build targets.

Understanding Engineers - Take Five

The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"
The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"
The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"
The graduate with a liberal arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

Understanding Engineers - Take Six

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.

One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints."

Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."

The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"

Understanding Engineers - Take Seven

Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

Understanding Engineers - Take Eight

An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess."

He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.

The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week."

The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.

The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a Princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want."

Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.

Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter with you? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess, and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"

The engineer replied, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend.  But a talking frog?  Now that's cool."

Why do people believe chain mails?

A few weeks back I received a email through my college mailing list from a friend about "a girl who lost her hands in a bomb blast and she would get 1 paise for every person to whom the mail is forwarded to". I have received numerous emails before but this was the last straw. So I replied telling her not to be such a fool to believe such mails.

She said "believe it or not, will get satisfaction that am helping a girl...  "

So I said "Along with the satisfaction you will also earn the sin of sending these chain mail forwards to hundreds of your friends." and asked her to instead send out a DD/Cheque to the hospital to which she asked me to prove that such mails aren't true.

Now I didn't know whether this girl was in her senses or not. I was determined to clearly explain her. So I typed out a long mail which I am producing here in full.

[Explanation]

Here are some of the reasons why I am sure that that email is a hoax.
  1. There is no way anyone can track down how many people read a particular email.
  2. There is no way to even know whether the email was forwarded or not.
  3. Current mail standards doesn't have the ability to do things in point 1 and 2. And they won't be implemented forever - as for many people feel that privacy and confidentiality is more important than earning 10 cents/mail.
  4. Only if someone is tracking all the forwards, they will be able to audit and give the poor girl the 25lacs. From #3 you can be sure that the forwards which you send are totally useless.
  5. Money doesn't grow on trees. If you had attended your primary physics classes, you would have learnt about Law of Conservation of Mass. In simple terms - the total amount of matter in the universe is constant. You cannot create more money. Especially, you cannot create more of anything by forwarding mails - except maybe the amount of spam mail, the anger of your friends who get the spam, etc.
  6. You may counter #5 by telling that someone may donate the money for her cause. Assuming that there really is someone who is donating the money for charity - it would be easy and faster for them to save the girl's life (by directly donating to the hospital) than to wait for the hundreds of youngsters to forward mails to millions of people. It isn't worth the effort.
  7. If earning money was as easy as forwarding emails, then all indians working in the so-called indian multinational companies will be the richest guys. Sorry - couldn't resist that one.
  8. After getting tens and hundreds of such emails since you created an email account, if you had applied some logic - you would realise that this is a hoax and you are only making a fool of yourself by forwarding. Come on, logic can be applied to places other than the interview puzzles.
So you may ask why do people do such things? One simple reason is - it is a huge farm of email addresses waiting to be harvested. A simple regular expression would do the wonder of finding all the email addresses and this provides an opportunity for mail bombing the entire list of email addresses with ads for medicines which can do wonders to you-know-what and you-know-which. ;-)

Please do read this link about a similar email and the explanation about it. http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/medical/cancer.asp

So people, I plead you to first check the facts first about such email forwards with www.snopes.com.
It has a comprehensive list of email hoaxes, spam and chain mails and tell you whether it was true or not.
If
you refer to snopes first - then you will realise that forwarding 10
emails of some lord's picture brings you luck, coughing during an heart

attack, wax in the instant noodles, drinking cold water after a meal,
coca cola dissolving tooth, KFC using mutant chicken, etc are all false.

Btw,
just now saw that some rubber bands made in china that you wear on your

hair are made using recycled condoms. That one is true. Refer http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/hairband.asp
Be careful when you buy rubber bands. ;-)

Hope
to have helped. Even after this if you think that girl will get money
by forwarding emails - then forward to every individual email address

in the group instead of a single group ID. That way you can earn 6rs
for that girl instead of just 10ps. :D
Ha Ha.

[/Explanation]

After reading such a long explanation any one would understand and stop this nonsensical chain mail mania, but I was proved wrong after reading her reply.
"I dont take things seriously. I thought you might be getting angry on my reply. whenever I saw these kind of mails i would pity for those people. So,I will be forwarding atmost two people who r very close to me.(they will not tell anything na). "

Posterous or Tumblr

I was thinking of a blog for cruns and yesterday decided to start off with tumblr. But now I see posterous and found that it has support for custom domains, multiple authors (setup multiple email addresses) and automatically posts to various other services too. And it automatically converts the files into nice gallery or MP3/video players.

One reason why I am thinking of a hosted model is that I didn't want to setup wordpress for this, but would like to export my data out if needed to some other blog engine at a later stage. Which one will allow me to export? I think Posterous may be more into listening into their customers as they are from ycombinator.

Maybe I should try out posterous a bit more before I jump into one. What do you think I should use? Posterous or Tumblr? Any other suggestions?

Composing mail is painful

Many seem to like posterous, but I always have thought that composing emails are painful.
I like twitter's interface to post an entry. But posterous is a totally different niche. I haven't tried uploading photos or documents, so I can't say how good it is.
But who is going to pay for all the file storage and bandwidth? What is the business plan?
